Fairfield Observes International Overdose Awareness Day

On August 31st, International Overdose Awareness Day was observed, a day dedicated to shedding light on the pressing public health crisis. Fairfield once again participated in raising awareness.

The town’s sixth annual vigil commenced at 7 p.m. on the Sherman Town Green, serving as a solemn remembrance for those lost to overdoses, individuals in recovery, and those grappling with addiction.

This vigil was a collaborative effort, co-hosted by the Fairfield Health Department, the police department, and the Fairfield CARES Community Coalition.

In the previous year, the United States witnessed over 100,000 lives lost due to drug overdoses. The Connecticut Department of Public Health reported 1,531 confirmed overdose deaths in the state, signifying an 11.4% increase compared to 2020.

The Fairfield CARES Community Coalition maintains a distinct focus on addressing substance misuse while nurturing social and emotional well-being and resilience among youth, young adults, and families. Additionally, the organization offers educational resources regarding fentanyl, distributes test strips, and conducts Narcan training.
