Sacred Heart University students, Uber driver hurt in crash

Fairfield, CT – In a collision right in front of Sacred Heart campus, six people—including five Sacred Heart University students—suffered significant injuries.

A 2018 black Audi and a 2021 white Toyota Corolla, according to Fairfield police, collided near the junction of Jefferson Street and Park Avenue soon after midnight on Friday. When police came, they discovered the Audi on its roof.

At a press conference held on Friday morning, Fairfield police Lt. Ed Nook said, “The black Audi was going eastbound on Jefferson Street when the Audi appeared to hit a curb, pushing it into the westbound lane, and the crash occurred right there on Jefferson Street.”

According to officials, the Audi’s sole occupant was the vehicle’s driver, a sophomore at Sacred Heart University. At St. Vincent’s Hospital, he is presently in serious condition.

Four female freshmen were traveling in the Toyota Corolla that an Uber driver was operating. One of the first-year students is described as being in critical condition at St. Vincent’s, two others are listed as being in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital, and the fourth is listed as being in critical but stable condition there.

Police said the driver is an older man and is in critical but stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital.

The university canceled some morning classes so students and faculty could gather for prayer service Friday morning in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.

University representatives announced this weekend’s family weekend will go as planned in an email to the campus community

Police stated that they are investigating the crash’s cause, the drivers’ speeds, and whether or not alcohol or drugs were a factor.

This is a developing story.
