Fairfield has scheduled an election recount, with 42 votes separating the first selectmen candidates.

In the town’s unofficial results, which were finished Wednesday morning, Democrat Bill Gerber received 42 more votes than incumbent Republican First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick. According to unofficial figures, Gerber received 8,966 votes while Kupchick received 8,924.

According to the Office of the Registrar of Voters, the recount of Fairfield’s first selectman race will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Bigelow Center for Senior Activities.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the Democratic party wrote. “Election Day 2023 was overwhelmingly positive for our Democratic slate, with Gerber and Vitale for Fairfield winning at the top of our ticket. While there may be a recount, we don’t expect that victory to be altered.”

The recanvass will review the machine vote, absentee vote, and write-in ballots for this office, and no others.” Fairfield Town Clerk Betsy Browne wrote in a letter to the Registrars of Voters office, referring individually to the three races.
