Enhanced Safety Measures Planned for Redding Road in Fairfield

Fairfield, Connecticut — In response to two fatal pedestrian accidents on Redding Road within the past three years, significant safety improvements are on the horizon to enhance visibility and safety along this vital thoroughfare.

First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick recently announced that a series of safety enhancements are planned for the entire stretch of Redding Road, spanning from Hulls Farm Road to Mile Common. These improvements include the installation of center-line rumble strips and edge line painting or fog lines.

The Fairfield Police Commission unanimously approved these measures earlier this week, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing road safety in the area.

“This initiative marks the beginning of phase 1 of the Redding Road safety project, which also encompasses a right-of-way survey aimed at providing pedestrians with a safe path,” shared Kupchick in her latest Town Update.

Tragedy struck in June when 45-year-old Fairfield resident Meghan Raveis lost her life while walking along Redding Road. Similarly, in July 2020, Marileidy Morel-Araujo, a visitor from Pennsylvania, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident while in town.

Arrests have been made in connection with both accidents, with one case still pending.

Over the summer, First Selectwoman Kupchick, along with local residents, members of the Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, the Engineering Department, and experts from the Training and Technical Assistance Center at the University of Connecticut, conducted a comprehensive safety audit of Redding Road.

In the wake of Meghan Raveis’s untimely death, an online petition was launched, advocating for the introduction of rumble strips and other safety measures along Redding Road. To date, this petition has garnered over 2,700 signatures, with the ultimate goal of reaching 5,000.

The proposed safety enhancements represent a significant step forward in bolstering road safety along Redding Road, and they underscore the community’s commitment to preventing future accidents and ensuring the well-being of all residents and visitors.
